It's certainly not off topic to ask for help here. Welcome to the
group. Sometimes I don't know what folks are talking about either!
;-) First of all, if you haven't read the FAQ's and Getting Started
Guide at the Files site, please do.

These should help somewhat. It's a LOT to try to learn astronomy AND
astro photography all at once. Before we can help you we need to know
more, like what kind of camera, scope and adapter (to attach the camera
to the eyepiece) you're using. Do you have anyone at the university who
can help you learn how to use the telescope? You won't be able to do
much if you can't move the scope to where you want it.

By the way, this particular group is for digital still cameras, both
regular digital cameras and digital SLR's. The group which discusses
astro imaging with webcams is at the link below.
