Most likely problem is that your monitor is not properly calibrated.

You can do a quickie check/adjustment of the gamma etc. Do a Google
search to find dozens of monitor gamma adjustment pages, such as:

http://www.photoscientia.co.uk/Gamma.htm

Or you can take it to the next level and "profile" your monitor (and
printer, and scanner... for each paper or ink combination you might
use). This assures that each device will interpret and reproduce the
colors and levels accurately, using a standard model. The images
will then be produced with consistent results on any other system
that has also been properly profiled.

It is especially the bane of us dealing with low contrast images
that many monitors are not set to allow proper viewing of our
pics... Hence the 16 bar grayscale patterns plonked on many of our
pages to alert the viewer they may be missing subtle details.
