Gert,
The below is just my opinion.
Speaking mostly from terrestrial photography experience and only slightly
from astrophotography experience, I do not think that the majority of LCDs
out there (i.e. the ones people can generally afford) are anywhere near as
good as a medium-range (not the cheapest) CRT for imaging processing. The
areas where LCDs suffer most are some of the areas that are the most
important for astro images.
If you get a decent, graphics-oriented CRT (such as a mid-range Sony -- my
preference, for however long Sony continues to make CRTs -- <sigh>) it can
be calibrated to produce pretty much as close to a color-matched image as
possible. If you can afford it, get a Sony Artisan monitor. There is
nothing better in my opinion.
Unless you get a very, very expensive LCD you're not going to get accurate
color and (in my experience) the dynamic range is very poor in comparison,
particularly toward the dark end, which always appears lighter than it
should be. I've had several instances where I've viewed shadow detail on a
calibrated (as much as it can be) LCD that looked blocky and too light, only
to view the same thing on a properly calibrated CRT to see the subtle
details. And as you mentioned, LCDs suffer terribly from viewing angle
issues, which I hate.
I can't stand to edit images on my laptop, at least for things like
levels/curves and subtle detail. And I have a very nice laptop.
I think that maybe -- just maybe -- the higher end LCDs that Apple is making
for their equipment are comparable to the better (but not the best) CRTs.
But you could afford two Sony Artisan monitors at that price. :)
