Since you have photoshop, try this... this will greatly reduce the
number of stars.

1. Take your original image and duplicate it.

2. Take the copy and run a "dust and scratches" filter on it (found in
filters > noise > dust and scratches. You'll have to play around with
the values, which generally starts with pushing up the radius slider
until you've removed a whole bunch of stuff (I settled on 7) and then
using the threshold slider to back off a bit and bring some detail
back into your image (I went with 24).

3. You now have an odd image where you should see just the nebulocity
with pretty much all the stars missing. Copy that image.

4. Paste it on top of the original image.

5. Change the blending mode to overlay.

Presto, your starfield has been significantly cut down while the
nebulocity should remain pretty much the same.
