Super image of M42, Forrest. Lots of detail, and very wispy nebulosity. Now
that you are a convert to Prime Focus, when will you permanently switch?

Cheers,

Well, I finally got the first (of many) images processed properly...whew!
I can't get over the difference going from the Nikon Coolpix 995 (afocal) to
the Canon D60 (prime focus) has made.

First off, it's a lot of work!! The D60 has horrible amp glow on long
exposures...and subtracting dark frames barely removes it, stretching the
image it comes right back. I didn't move my subject off-center far enough
to compensate, so you'll notice some shots I'll be posting will look
off-center...blame it on the amp noise and my inexperience with the camera.
I had gotten used to using the Nikon's NR mode and not taking dark
frames...I'm glad I took them with the D60 or I would have nothing to show
except noise and more noise.

Anyone who picks up one of these digital SLRs as their first astro camera
is courageous and I congratulate them if they're successful their first time
out. It took me 3 nights of wasted shots before I started getting anything
worth keeping...chalk that up to human error, not knowing how the camera
operated.

And I'm used to having digital zoom to get sharp focus...whoops! Not
available on the dSLR models...so the angle finder (at 2.5x) was all I had.
Many of my shots are slightly out of focus, so that's another lesson learned
AFTER the party was over.

Hope you enjoy this image from the Chiefland Star Party.
