[digital_astro] Re: More on Canon Colours, too little red? Too much blue?

Hi Samir,

I would agree that the most natural color is obtained by using day-
light for white balance. Auto white balance creates very blue images.

Here is an example of the same single raw image of M13 converted to
16-bit TIFF using auto and day-light white balance.

Converted from Canon raw to 16-bit Tiff using linear, auto white
balance, and natural color matrix:

balance, and natural color matrix:

Canon raw to 16-bit tiff conversion followed a digital development
stretch being applied to both images using ImagesPlus:

With all the recent discussion on a lack of red in 10D astro images
I went and carefully reprocessed a widefield image of Orion, taken
in a 1Ds earlier this year. Couple of observations:
1. It's amazing how many different colours such an image contains,
from the deep blue of the Running Man to the deep red of the
Horsehead, replete with an orange Betelgeuse and a blue Rigel thrown
in. One day I'll have a decent tracking platform to get a really
deep image of this fascinating region...
2. Did you ever ask yourself how Canon handles blooming spikes from
really bright stars? Looks like Canon zaps them into black oblivion;
so you end up with black blooming spikes! at a 45 degree diagonal to
boot!
I set up a web page examining the colours in detail, together with
the processing I normally use, here:
http://www.geocities.com/ultimaoptix/orion_colours.html
Have a read, you may end up as intrigued as I am. Eagerly awaiting
Orion's winter return.
