They are tempting, but I don't think I can give up the swiveling LCD. I take a lot of pictures of wildflowers and with the CP5000 I can get a small water plant in profile, or something as high as I can reach my hand, and compose the photo easily. The DSLRs just won't do that.

David,
It sounds like what you really need is an SLR-type design...either a true
dSLR (e.g. the Nikon D100 or Canon 300D) or one of the live-preview cameras
(e.g. the Minolta Dimage 7). Does Nikon make something that fills the
'live-preview' SLR design?
Since, for my purposes, I'm simply interested in turning off Auto Focus
and locking the focus at infinity...it does what I need.

Well, it was a rhetorical question. I've always felt like the manual focus
was a flaw in the camera design. It's what I always look for in other
digital cameras -- a really useable manual focus. I don't miss it so much
any more, though, I can usually get it to auto-focus on what I want with a
little effort.

David,
Not sure what you're asking, can you rephrase?

It's not much of a "feature", is it?

David,
Thanks for pointing that out...I've done it so many times I forgot you
have to hold the button while turning the dial. So, if the 5000 is that
similar to the 995...it only stands to reason that he 5400 might be very
similar.

On the CP5000 you have to hold the AF button while turning the dial.

Subject: [NikonCoolPix] 5400 manual focus
G'day folks,
My new Coolpix 5400 is great but I can't access
manual focus in the P, S, A and M modes. The camera continues to
cycle through the Auto, Infinity, Macro and Timer modes when I press
the AF button in the P, S, A and M modes.
Do you have any ideas on the subject? Have I missed something in the
manual? I've reset defaults, turned the camera off and removed
the battery to no effect.
The way I read the manual is that I should have manual focus in all
modes except in full auto and scene modes. Any thoughts on the
subject are appreciated.
