I think the answer is hidden in your own message.
You said it's cycling through Auto, Infinity, Macro and Timer modes.
While it's on Infinity try turning the wheel (at least this is how it's
done on the 995 model) and the Infinity should change to distance (in Meters
or Feet, depending how you have your camera configured).

My new Coolpix 5400 is great but I can't access
manual focus in the P, S, A and M modes. The camera continues to
cycle through the Auto, Infinity, Macro and Timer modes when I press
the AF button in the P, S, A and M modes.
Do you have any ideas on the subject? Have I missed something in the
manual? I've reset defaults, turned the camera off and removed
the battery to no effect.
The way I read the manual is that I should have manual focus in all
modes except in full auto and scene modes. Any thoughts on the
subject are appreciated.
