Your problem sounds highly similar to the behavior I had on my 950
after I dropped it. What had happened is that one of the plastic
cams in the focus/zoom mechanism had popped out of place when it hit
the floor. The camera couldn't focus ===> "System Error".
The other way this same thing can occur is if one of the plastic
pins in the focus mechanism fails (breaks off). There are several
cast on plastic pins in your focus mechanism (3 or 4?) and they
run in curved slots in other plastic parts. If any of them breaks
then the camera can't focus.
Since my camera was out of warranty I bit the bullet and opened it
up and found the problem and re-assembled the camera myself. Not
something I recommend to the 'faint of heart'. Do NOT try this if
your camera is still under warranty. There are no "user serviceable"
items inside your camera and if you open it up the repair techs at
Nikon will definitely know that you have done that and that would
void your warranty.
If is unlikely that anything you did with respect to the CF card
and/or turning the camera on or off is in any way related to the
problem. My best guess, based upon your description and my
experience with my 950, is that either one of the focus cams has
jumped out of place -OR- one of the plastic pins in the focus
mechanism has broken.
There may be other reasons for the dreaded "System Error" than
a camera that won't focus - but I don't know what they are.
Certainly this could happen if one of the many slide in electrical
connectors in the lens/focus section of the camera worked its way
out of its locked in 'home' position.
