On my 880, I have it set to always-focus mode. So, the lens is in
constant motion. However, if I turn off the LCD, the 880 will NOT
operate in this mode! In this case, it waits until you press the
shutter to focus and then eventually open the shutter.
I expect that your 3100 is the same way, and you're not used to the
(normal) delay. My camera must take 3 or 4 seconds to focus and
snap the shutter, but there is a way around this. Give the shutter
a half-press before you're ready to take the shot and give the
camera a chance to lock the focus. Then, when you complete the
press, the shutter opens immediately and it does not refocus. Note
that this only works if you already are pointing at your subject or
a similar subject at the same distance when you do the half-press.
It's kind of annoying having to remember all of the rules for all of
the modes, but once you realize what it's doing, it's easier to work
around the idiosyncracies.
