For astrophotography, I've found that I can never seem to let the
camera focus -- it'll never get it right! Here's what seems to work
for me: put the camera in Macro mode, and manually set the distance
(check the manual -- for mine, you hold the "infinity/macro" button
and press the zoom buttons) for a very short distance. Then, if I
can center in on my target, I use digital zoom on the camera so that
I can focus correctly -- the focus for your eye will never match the
camera, unless you can match the "distance" to where it works out
the same -- I never had that much patience to figure that out, but
it would be helpful, now that I think about it some more. Anyway,
usually, I can focus on "something" in the LCD. I can then take it
out of digital zoom if I want.
A couple of weeks ago, I chased Mars and managed one barely
acceptable pic to show for about a couple of hours work. :-( I
have spent a lot of time on astrophotography -- it's an interesting
challenge, but it's a lot more difficult than regular photography,
because you're juggling so many things at once. The pics never turn
out nearly as nice as what I can see with my eyes.
Oh, like someone else mentioned, you either need the remote cord and
use bulb mode (for stars or deep space objects), or you may be able
to get away with using the timer, and setting the shutter time
manually. The longest shutter you can have while using the timer is
8 seconds, which for my small scope isn't often enough.
I usually leave white balance to "auto", but the colors do not
always come out right!
