Chet, I am also the happy owner of a 3100. I don't know about the slave
flash situation, but I will tell you that it is characteristic of the 3100
to take dark flash photos. I have greatly improved the quality of my flash
by increasing the exposure by at least 0.7, sometimes 1.0 depending on the
room I'm in. With those settings I have gotten good exposure to 10 or 15 feet.
