Since I don't know what was in those areas, it is difficult to tell for
sure, but it appears as though you are getting messed up by your camera's
exposure system.
The camera will attempt to adjust the area of the photo that is being
metered to a theoretical 15% grey tone. When you shoot a predominantly dark
object like that trunk, your camera will lighten the object until it
reaches an acceptable level, thus over exposing the bright back ground. It
is similar to taking an indoor shot of a person sitting in front of a
window on a sunny day - doesn't work. The window and anything outdoors will
be completely over exposed. Make sense?
