What have you done to try to recover the files? A lot of times you
can use a file recovery program to get some of the files back, even
if you cannot read them through the "normal" means, such as Windows
Explorer. It's worth a shot, particularly if they mean as much to
you as you indicated.
A lot of the file recovery programs are inexpensive, and I found one
that was free. I posted about it a while ago:

In one case, I deleted all of the photos from the CF card, and
wanted one back that I accidentally deleted on the computer. I was
able to retrieve it from the CF card because I had not taken enough
new photos to overwrite the original memory location!
Also, I had a CF card go bad on me (at a different point in time).
I don't remember if I was concerned about the loss of any particular
photos, but I eventually had the card replaced (after a lot of
hassle with the support line). Low risk or not, it can happen; all
the more reason to look into recovery programs, just-in-case. (Just
keep in mind that there is no guarantee of recovery!) Even so, it's
not something that I worry about, but I do take care to not remove
the card from the computer until I'm sure it's done with it.
Another reason to have multiple cards is that if one is stolen or
misplaced, you also reduce your chances that ALL of your photos are
gone. When I travelled, I could leave full cards with my luggage
and take not-yet-full cards on the go, or put a full one in my
wallet, or however I felt like doing it.
I do think there is also some risk while sightseeing and stopping to
swap out memory cards. Not a huge deal, but everytime you have to
stop and fuss with your camera is another risk of dropping
something, having it stolen, or having your spouse get annoyed that
you're fooling with your camera again and to hurry up. ;-)
All that being said, if money were no object, I would probably
prefer one huge card to hold it all! But since I've been buying
cards little by little, when the price is right, I have varying
sizes, slowly getting larger. So I have an 8, 32, 64, and 2 128's.
:-) I don't use the 8 or 32 anymore. :-)
Maybe if you ONLY use one card, it won't be at a risk for loss,
since you'll always find it in your camera. ;-)
(You should have seen me on my trip to England with just the 32, 64,
and one 128mb cards! Yikes. Hard to cram 400 photos in that
space! Next trip, now that I have the extra 128, I can leave the 32
at home... No, I'd better take that too! I don't care how much
memory you have, you can find ways to fill it up!)
Oh, and to the person who says get a faster CF card, that assumes
that you have one of the newer cameras. On my 880, the SanDisk
Ultra is barely faster than my other cards, if any. Although,
reading into the computer seems faster, it's pretty much a waste for
the 880.
