Ways to cover the flash sounded helpful. (And I wouldn't worry
about it being "amateurish" if it works! :-) It's the results that
count, and sometimes a bit of low tech can assist your high tech.)
About changing the camera's metering, will that really fix flash
problems? I would think that you'll still have harsh shadow lines
and close subjects (a few feet) will be visible, and distant objects
will be dark. It may help to prevent the subject from being "blown
out" entirely, though, so you still might have a point. Well, I
think this deserves some testing.
I just tested a couple of shots on my cat (about 2 feet away!), and
nothing was blown out. I did have it set to low contrast, however.
(I had it set to low contrast yesterday, because I was having
trouble with a subject [in daylight] getting blown out, and I
figured that lower contrast might give me greater dynamic range. I
dunno! Sometimes it seems to work.)
Regardless of whether or not flash looks OK, your settings allow for
finer control in general, so it's probably a good way to go. I will
just have to motivate myself to do the extra work. :-) I guess I
like matrix metering because 90% of the time, things up out great.
I have enough things to fuss over! :-)
What if I'm not in a flash situation, and I'm focusing on something
which is NOT intended to be the lightest thing? Or, are the below
comments only regarding flash?
