Hi Andy,

Have you tried using both of the following options in the camera's
menu:

1. Menu 1 - Metering - Set to Spot Auto-Focus Area.
2. Menu 2 - Focus Options - AF Area Mode - Set to Manual.

Close your menu screen then make sure the LIGHTEST are that you want
in your final photograph is the area you are focussing on. The round
button on the right lets you select which of the five focus areas has
control.

This will seem like extra work at first. After you get used to it
(50 - 70 shots or so) it will start to become second nature to you.

As for another person's comment about the Slow-Sync flash/shutter
setting taking too long. I always quickly find something to prop my
elbow or camera on or against. That makes it much easier to hold the
camera steady. One example is if you are sitting. Place a foot on the
edge of your chair, prop your elbow on your knee or thigh to steady
yourself, then shoot the photo. You might want to slip off your shoe
if you're sitting on a friend's high quality sofa. Other possible
braces are: door frames; table lamps; the pole of floor lamps; a
willing partner's shoulder; back of a chair; a stair railing; a
pepper mill taken from the kitchen and placed on a table, or
television set. So many possibilities when you open your imagination.

photos in the evening, that if the flash is on, the subject is way
too bright and white, but if I turn it off, then the exposure time
(often 1 sec) makes it far too long to be useful. It's kinda like I
want to turn down the flash level a little. Is there some setting I
should belooking at?
