I found a helpful tip in a photo magazine about one year ago. Hold a
small piece of white paper in front of the flash. Using a thin paper
works best. You can then adjust how much light is blocek by
increasing the number of pieces held in front.

I simply took a sheet of velum paper, cut out 5 strips and put a
staple through them at one end. I creased the paper so I can keep my
fingers on top of the camera, and the sheets fall over the flash. I
keep the excess paper strips held "up" between the fingers holding
the strips to the top of the camera.

Another way of using the paper strips is to use different colors of
paper in lieu of colored filters over the lens.
