How true! I already had one image scrambled on my CF card when I was
just learning to download via a card reader. There was something
defective with that reader when using it with my Win98 computer.
Fortunately, I had previously downloaded to a WinXP laptop which
worked perfectly, so I had a backup. Since then I took the card
reader (PNY) back and exchanged it (SanDisk) which works perfectly
with both OS's.
It was strange that only one image was affected and not the entire
card. The card reader apparently got into some mode with Win98 and I
could not stop it from continuously flashing without rebooting the
computer (...yes, I know about "Eject"). The disconnect probably
happened while it was stuck on that one image.
BTW, I downloaded NikonView6 for WinXP and it seems to work very well
despite some negative comments I've seen. I had to settle for
NikonView4 for Win98 (only Win98SE is supported by NV6) but have not
tried it yet.
Thanks again! Looking forward to learning at the wedding.
Fortunately the pro and my semi-pro wife will be using film so we
have plenty of redundancy.
