My 4300 only takes about 1 second. Yes, one second in auto mode. The
firmware in it is 1.5. Have your friend check his firmware. I don’t know
if the firmware has anything to do with it but it might be worth
checking. I know that when I had an 885 that I sent in to Nikon that
when I got it back that it focused much faster but it would not focus
correctly in certain modes, thus my 4300 is a replacement for the 885
they messed up.

When I handled the 4300 at a wedding reception, I was going to take an
indoor shot of the owner with a friend. I was amazed at the slow

speed of the camera. I missed the posed shot because of it.
I have since checked the camera and find that it takes about 5 seconds
to
get AF confirmation. The 995 is on the order of 2 seconds.
I do not have the camera, but I have asked the owner to check settings

such to verify the focusing speed.
Does your 4300 take 5 seconds for focus confirmation?
