This is exactly my frustration with my 4300. Less than 4 months of
use, NO external scuffs/scratches, and with NO warning in the middle
of a day of shooting it fails. This is unacceptable, and puts it
squarely in the realm of high-priced toys in my opinion. I've used
35mm and other digital cameras for years and this camera seems to be
by far the least rugged of all of them. If I can't trust this thing
to work every time I turn it on I'm going to look at another brand of
cameras, especially after hearing and seeing some of the stories on
the web.
Mine is under warranty, so it's not going to cost me anything. But
I've already missed several good photo opportunities (my 2 yr old
daughter giving her mother a birthday cake among them) and every time
it occurs to me to take a picture I get more irritated.
NikonUSA, if you're listening, get your act together! Make cameras
that last! If they fail often your reputation is shot, and most
people are going to experience Nikon products as digital cameras now,
not 35mm SLRs, so your reputation in the 35mm/pro camera world is NOT
going to carry you through this.
The LEAST NikonUSA should do is send a few refurbished Coolpixes to
the local camera shops as loaners for WHEN their customers' cameras
have to be sent in for service. I'm sure by now there is a huge pile
of refurbished cameras at the service depot, maybe that's why they're
offering refurbs for sale on their website!
