I did the same thing a few months ago and had the same result. Because I'm
too cheap to send it out for repair and at the time, my wife wouldn't let
me buy a new toy <grin>, I attempted the repair myself. There was, I
thought a reference web page available that someone had posted - I just
tried to find it for you and wasn't able to. I was scared to death when at
one point I had a big pile of parts in front of me, but it did turn out to
be a simple mechaism that controls the lens focusing that had slipped off
its pins. I breathed a big sigh of relief when it all worked again when put
back together.

I think Nikon charges around $250 for the repair. Can someone else confirm
this?

I have since upgraded to the CP4500. With the $200 rebate, you can get it
now for around $350. I paid about $450 2 months ago. Love it.
