Helen, Thanks. You know, I hadn't thought of putting anything on the monitor to help, but that really makes sense. That and the exposure advice should help a lot. Take care,Roberta

Olympus gives you a line across the screen to line uop your photos, and inserts a little mark into each photo that their software uses to line stuff up. Canon actually displays a part of the preceding photo to use to line up with.
To get a good panorama keep your zoom consistent, use exposure lock and set your exposure with the first picture somewhere in the middle of the light range. This is essentially a throwaway picture. If you start in the brightest or darkest spots, the pictures at one end will be over or under exposed.
This will seem silly perhaps, but if you tape a piece of clear plastic with crosshairs drawn on it at each end, half way up and about 1/4 inch into the display area over your LCD, it makes it very easy to line up successive shots. Still remember to take that throwaway shot first.
There is lots of excellent software for stitching. Much of it has free demos. I believe I have tried 27 different ones and while I cannnot say which ones are best at the moment, my memory is a little fractured at best. I would try panovista, panorama tools, anything from canon as theirs seem to be excellent, Olympus Camedia etc.
Pano Tools is of course excellent, but is not for the faint at heart.
Many people also make wonderful panoramas by scanning in photos and hand stitching them together. Not an easy task
Best of luck
Helen

Subject: [NikonCoolPix] Panorama Firmware for 950
Hello, I have a Coolpix 950 model and am trying to gain some features, perhaps through firmware or otherwise. For instance, The newer models of the Coolpix have the ability to select a panorama options (as well as others). The panorama feature has guidelines to help you move and shoot with a correct overlap and then puts those pictures in a separate folder, making it easy to find them later. Pictures line up and stitch together well when using third-party software. Is there any firmware for the Coolpix 950 camera that would enable the panorama and other features? I don't care if it is a third party of Nikon. Thanks,Roberta
