[NikonCoolPix] Re: Photography magazines

My favorite digital photography magazine was "digitalFOTO". I
say "was", because they are no more. It's really a shame, because
they seemed to really understand photography, and I always felt that
I learned something from article to article. And yet, they could
still squeeze in a few quick camera reviews.

I was going to say that a lot of these magazines, such as PCPhoto,
have too many camera reviews, but they are not any more than
digitalFOTO had. What's the difference? I dunno, I just don't feel
as if there is as much substance with some of these others.

I suppose camera reviews are good if you're in the market for a new
model, but I'm going to try to not buy new ones too frequently.
:-)

I was just given a subscription to eDIGTAL PHOTO, and I finally
received the first one. It seems similar, but with one fewer camera
review than the PCPhotos (3) (and presumably a couple of pages of
other content to make up the difference, but I don't have the
patience to count pages just to be sure and find out :-) ). PCPhoto
has 4 pages of "What's coming next?" type of regurgitated press
releases of miscellaneous items, while eDIGITAL seems to have one
page of upcoming cameras.

Both PCPhoto and eDIGITAL PHOTO seem to have reviews of software,
techniques & tips, and of course ads, particularly in the last 20
pages. It's easy enough to ignore the last 20 pages, but if you ARE
in the market, sometimes it's fun to browse the ads, so I really
can't complain about them too much. They subsidize the magazines.

I don't see how you could go wrong with either mag. (I have
subscriptions to both, currently.) I do wonder if I should look
into a more pure photography mag., as it's the photography end that
I'm working on! I need printer reviews like a hole in my head. I
have two printers next to me right now... Judging from this light
comparison, if I had to choose just one over the other, I would
guess that eDIGITAL has slightly more real content. I have no
opinion aside from that as to which is better in terms of quality,
accuracy, etc. (These things are pretty cheap subscriptions, so I
say go for both if you have to. :-) )

Meanwhile, when I'm finished with most of my mags, I'm giving them
away.... except that I'm keeping my digitalFOTOs! (Well, better to
pass them along for someone else to enjoy than just tossing them
[er, recycling of course].)

I would be curious to know more about the "photography and art"
magazines, and whether or not this amateur could make good use of
the info.
