You are likely having the "the poor quality Nikon sound", the lens drive
mechanism is failing. I had the Nikon Coolpix 800 and after 18 months, I
had that sound once and the mechanism broke. Cost, well after all the
problems with Nikon and their dealers, first the cost was $385.00, then
thru my determination they reduced the cost to $125.00. But, it was not
the cost that got me, it was the poor quality of the camera. I have
Nikon FE and it is over 18 years old, it is still functioning the way
that it did 18 years ago. No problems whatsoever, only once in the
shop(clinic) to check the operation. Check this, you get a lens cap for
the camera with and a hole in it to attach a string to attach the lens
cap to the camera, BUT, wait, there is no place on the camera to attach
it to, did the Engineers and the Designer of the camera have a bad day????
Nikon smarten up and get better quality control, or you will loose many
others like me.
