I was looking at the Ericsson.... errr, 'Ma/Com Wireless' EDACS homepage a
little while ago, and see they have just released a P25 capable radio.

RELM Wireless Receives Federal Communications Commission Approval for APCO
Project 25 - Compliant Digital Radio
WEST MELBOURNE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 25, 2003--RELM Wireless
Corporation (NASDAQ:RELM) a manufacturer, developer, and distributor of
wireless land mobile radio (LMR) products, announced that its new VHF digital
portable radio, the DPH, has been approved by the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) for use in the United States.
The DPH is compliant with the Project 25 standard established by the
Association of Public Safety Communication Officials (APCO). Project 25,
which establishes a standard for digital LMR devices to meet FCC requirements
for more efficient use of radio spectrum, is being increasingly adopted by
government and public safety, land mobile radio (LMR) users nationwide.
Utilizing state of the art technology, the DPH was developed internally by
the Company's engineering team and provides major advantages over other
digital portable radio offerings, including a unique combination of
outstanding performance, technical specifications, and affordability. The DPH
is significantly less expensive than any comparable product currently
offered, yet offers excellent audio clarity and extended battery life.
Furthermore, complex, non-critical functions have been streamlined or
eliminated, making the unit very easy to use. Current BK Radio customers can
utilize existing accessories, such as antennas and batteries, a capability
that further reduces an initial investment. Moreover, the core design of the
digital board allows the Company's GPH analog portable radios to be upgraded
to the new digital platform. Accordingly, current BK Radio analog users can
transform their analog units to digital APCO Project 25-compliant radios at a
cost lower than the purchase of a new DPH. The Company also offers a trade-in
program for its E-Series portable radio under which customers can receive
credit toward the purchase of a new DPH.
David Storey, President and CEO of RELM, commented, "We have long believed
that APCO Project 25-compliant digital products are a strategic key to our
future success. The FCC approval of the DPH is a critical milestone toward
achieving our objectives for growth and profitability. It is important to
emphasize that our design and digital technology was developed internally and
is RELM-owned, not licensed from a competitor. The end result is a product
that, we believe, is by far the best value in the market today for APCO
Project 25 compliant digital portable radios. With the DPH completed, our
development efforts have been brought to bear on an APCO Project 25 compliant
VHF digital mobile radio, the DMH. We look forward to introducing the DMH
later this year."
Project 25 specifies features and signaling for narrow band digital voice and
data, in both conventional and trunking modes of operation. The standard has
been adopted by the U.S. Federal Government, which has targeted a conversion
to Project 25 by year-end 2005. A cornerstone of Project 25 is to provide
effective inter-operability among users of compliant equipment, regardless of
the manufacturer. Through this open system architecture, Project 25 will
provide an environment where users will have a wider selection of LMR
suppliers, such as RELM.
For over 55 years, RELM has manufactured and marketed two-way FM
business-band radios as well as high-specification public safety mobile and
portable radios, repeaters and accessories, base station components and
subsystems. Products are manufactured and distributed worldwide under RELM
Communications, Uniden PRC and BK Radio brand names. The company maintains
its headquarters in West Melbourne, Florida and can be contacted through its
web site at www.relm.com or directly at 1-800-648-0947.
