Didn't read all the posts in this thread but the last that I know is
they are not going to be trunked. They were going to be like Barrie
PD with conventional Astro APCO 25 repeaters with voted receivers.
Similar to what they had but newer digital radios and
Centracom Gold Elite consoles.
What is wrong with sole sourcing? Since they own all Motorola APCO 25
portables, the only infrastructure that is 100% compliant is from
Motorola. Motorola is the only supplier of this equipment since the
small dealers are forbidden to compete under Motorola's request for
big systems.
At least they got the system that works as they wanted, better
coverage with nobody controlling it other than themselves and cheaper
in the long run. By the way, how much is the BMR total so far to the
provincial government? Who is paying for all those additional base
stations at those busy sites? Well I guess we will be as
taxpayers.........

Niagara could go with any of the p25 vendors out there I believe? Kenwood, Transcrypt and Racal all make p25 equipment.

Since Niagara Regional Police's plan is eventually to run encryption,
getting radios, etc.. from another source other than Motorola would
render encryption useless.

P25 is a standard set of protocols including encryption. NRPS can purchase
radios and encryption from any one of the vendors and they should all
communicate if they order the right pieces.
Not much sense having different forms of encryption between different
vendors since the US government wants interoperability and one of their
biggest must haves is encryption. This way multiple vendors can supply
their needs including encryption.

I was talking about the infrastructure hardware and software which
would only be suppliable by Motorola! I know other manufacturers like
EFJ and Transcript make user equipment but only Motorola makes the
infrastructure components.

Umm. Sorry to butt in here, Mike.. but P25 is an across-the-board
encryption standard for all digital radios, regardless of make or
model... that was the purpose of the P25 project, to ensure an industry
standard rather than proprietary technology.

In a nutshell, no. They are on an EDACS system, but are digital. Other
London public works groups on the system are analog... They can be
monitored just fine (water dept, roads, parks, animal control etc
etc).. The police however are using either AEGIS or ProVoice digital, and
may or may not be encrypted (looks like they are)... The details are
somewhat sketchy.

Do a Google search (http://www.google.com) for "NATO phonetic alphabet".
