Subject: Ottawa River Marine Freqs.

Although this is a complete list of frequencies for marine traffic (
http://www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/cen-arc/mcts-sctm/vhf_e.htm ). Is there anything on
the Ottawa River up through the valley that I could possibly look out for.

Haven't really thought about monitoring for this type of activity, sure it's
really cold in March right now, but I thought I'd try and get ahead of the
game here.

As soon as the weather clears, I'm putting up an outdoor antenna to pull in
some stronger distance signals.

One's thing for certain, I don't live on the river system, but a few miles
from there, would I be able to even listen to anything on the river.

Try ARC780 (www.butel.nl). It's one of the cheapest programs and works
great.

Arc780 is one of the easier to use programs and will run under Win 3.1. The
drawback is no logging unless its been updated. Trunkstar780 logs, but is harder
to use and may have some bugs. Also TS780 allows audio recording to hard drive
which ARC780 doesn't support. Most claim the ARC780 has far superior tech
support. There should be demos of both programs out there.

Looks like LFD has added another simplex channel.... TAC 5.... I just
caught the tail end of a call, and it looks like TAC 5 is 860.8375. I'll
keep the scanner handy the next little while and try to confirm that.

I've heard two alarms on TAC 5 now, one for 9 company (South London) and
one for 11 company (Lambeth... SW London)... I'm in the South end of London
myself, but I'm getting a pretty weak signal on 860.1625 using my Relm
HS-200. I'll hafta do a search with my BC780 that's hooked to my outdoor
antenna and see what I can turn up. That's the most likely candidate at
this point though. For the longest time they seemed to use TAC 3 for
alarms in the NW part of the city (particularly the UWO area) and TAC 4 for
the Eastern edge of the city. That seems to have shuffled around
some... An alarm just went out for UWO a few minutes ago and they were on
TAC 4.... So it looks like there is some shuffling going on.

OK Michael, that's easy to do. I've cut off everything from Lake Superior north and now it just shows zones one and two. Originally it was sized to print from a plotter as a wall map and this option is still available if anyone wants it. I have resized it to fit landscape on an 8.5 x 11.0 paper and it is much smaller in file size.
I've also removed the freqs as they are available as updates elsewhere so what I need now is help with is the sites. Are all of the zone one sites listed at trunkedradio now active? Could anyone post which ones aren't? I assume none of the zone two size have finished testing.
Thanks,

One thing that immediately comes to mind is to cut off northern Ontario
where the system doesn't exist yet leaving a much smaller map. 2.6 MB
might be a bit too much for those without high-speed Internet. As for
the frequencies, I'd leave them off the map as they still seem to be
building the system and adding new frequencies. The site numbers and
maybe a list of numbers & site names would be good.

These days, a scout unit seems to refer to the standard divisional
marked car with uniformed occupants.
At the risk of showing my age, that term was in use in Toronto for
over 30 years. I think it might date from the days when very few
marked cars other than traffic cars had a red light, but it was never
clear to me whether "scout" meant a marked/light equipped car versus
the standard unmarked sedan. The term "Cruiser" used to mean an
unmarked traffic car. (Anybody out there remember those old two-door
Plymouth sedans with the slanted headlights? Must've been about
1964.....I was looking up to the bumper back then <g>)

All the zone 1 sites listed at trunkedradio.net have been active for over a
year now. The only exceptions would be the Niagara sites which are marked
not in service.
Zone 2 sites are going in now with many on the air.

At the risk of dating myself, I haven't lived in Toronto in 16 years.
But it seems to me that (and I could be wrong) that a scout car was a
one man unit, thus a scout??? Could be wrong.

The Boatnerd.com site has a forum where I'm sure you'll find someone in your area that would help you with freqs and users.

Although this is a complete list of frequencies for marine traffic (
http://www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/cen-arc/mcts-sctm/vhf_e.htm ). Is there anything on
the Ottawa River up through the valley that I could possibly look out for.
