GTAA Emergency command is reporting a 1-C (one-charlie), which is an
aircraft in distress, in flight.
Everyone on the 1-C is going to "Talkgroup One".
GTAA is on the Peel Trunk system.

The 402 Westbound from Strathroy is still closed. OPP were really busy out

The DPEP codes actually state a 1C as "aircraft *malfunction* in flight",
but I'm not gonna split hairs :-)
Did you find out what the problem was and which flight is was? I've been
listening to arrivals since your message came through and haven't heard
anything out of the norm.

Grin, I got it from the listing that happened to be on
TrunkedRadio.net, so don't blame me. :)

Yeah, an incoming airplane (had the reg. number, can't remember where
I wrote it... I think it was American Airlines) lost its flaps on
approach and had to land without 'em. According to the report on the
radio, its flaps split in flight, so "...the computer shut them down".
Not a huge deal, especially since the pilot was able to land without
them.
Apparently they were dealing with a possible fire in T2 at the same
time, so needless to say things were hairy.. :)

I'm not a licensed pilot however I know enough that flaps aren't enough to cause your decent to be a problem.......perhaps just required a longer lesser angle approach? Those comms could have been interesting though.

IMHO,
What actually happened, it am sure, is that the flaps were out of sync.
Possibly due to icing, one set of flaps extended before or more than the
other side. Once that happens the computers will stop the further
motion of all flaps. This is so that the aircraft will not become
unbalanced from the drag of the extended set of flaps. It can actually
be a very big problem and be a result of a more serious problem.

Chris is correct.. While it is possible to land without flaps (as
evidenced by the lack of a smoking crater just short of 24L) - it does
make for a more difficult landing, especially with the larger planes.
This is from my notes on the Boeing 747-400 non-normal procedures
information:
Flaps Drive: this occurs when you get asymmetric trailing edge flap and
the Flap control unit(FCU) shuts down the drive or any electric flap
disagrees with the commanded position. flap asymmetry is the worst case
here as you may be left to fly a split flap or even a zero flap landing.

Yup, both of you are correct. A larger wing span however negates the opportunity for a quick 'short' landing if that makes sense.
To keep the group on topic I saw a DC 3 or something similar fly over Barrie yesterday afternoon at a very low alt. Guaranteed it wasn't gonna land in town or the base to the west of here, maybe LSR but it was real low for a craft that size. Anybody have an idea what that was about? Or more specifically a freq?
