Subject: Re: Cell Phone frequencies
Cell phones use everything between 820-850mhz and 869-900mhz.
All these frequencies are standardized for north america and all the
frequencies are used. What you can hear depends on what towers are
near you. In general, you will only be able to listen to the towers
nearest you since the same frequency may be used on different towers
with different phonecalls within the same city. SImply put, scan this
frequency range and all you will get is cellphone chatter, and the
occasional data channel.
You need a scanner from canada or a modified scanner, since any/all
american imported scanners most likely are blocked for the cell phone
range.

Look in your scanner manual at the locked out ranges in the 800+ area, that's
where the analog cell phones are.

I have been neck deep into a Windows XP conversion at Rogers thet past little
while, so I haven't been scanning as much as I used to. But i just ran my 895xlt
on the Oshawa truck channels and for the first time it has actually locked onto
the system and is scanning. For the longest time I haven't been able to due to
the Durham Regional Police transmissions from a local tower and bleedover from
another cell tower here in Bowmanville.
Last weekend I did pick up transmissions from Clarington Fire on the 153.125 MHz
channel, but I am monitoring the trunk system and the 153.125 MHz channel now. If
anything new shows up, I'll let you know...

You're best plunking the UHF LPU frequencies into yuor scanner and seeing what comes up.
If they aren't licened, they might be renting radios.

I have heard some testing on the some of the new talkgroups, but so
far no dispatch simulcast like one would expect (cross patching) when
migration occurs from a conventional system to a new trunk system.

Clarington Fire just dispatched on 153.125 MHz for Station 3, so they are still on
the VHF channel with nothing on the trunk system.

Thanks Dave I would have thought by now that Bowmanville would have been
switched over to the 800 system by now, seeing how Oshawa is on line. I
guess thing are moving slowly for that area Thanks again if anything new
happens please let me know

Thing move slow here.. :) There is a distinct change in the quality of the
communications from Station one. Sounds like a new comm system and office, so
maybe they are on their way...

The Icom TH78A was a nice wide band radio, 138 to 174 Mhz TX
and I think UHF it went 400 to 470 but it might be 420Mhz. It also
has 800Mhz RX. Nice little unit.

The best list for weather buffs would be WX-CHASE-CAN, just send a email message to mailto:listserv@zeroreality.com with "SUBSCRIBE wx-chase-can" on the first line of the message. Lots of very experienced weather buffs on there including people from Environment Canada and lots of canwarn members and chasers! People on this list predicted this storm last monday but EC didn't because they are bound by so much red tape and can only use their own models for weather forcasting.
