Gentlemen (and Ladies)
Thank you so much for the much needed February blah smiles in some of
your recent postings.
I know that it's not the primary intent of this group to make someone
smirk/laugh/guffaw when reading postings or replies, but given that's
exactly what happened this grey morning while reading the
(sarcastic?) replies to the gentleman who was picking up a signal on
99.0 on his scanner, I couldn't help but use those infrequently used
muscles to pull a smile on my face. Some of you are definitely in
the wrong (right?) occupation.
Just thought I send a note of appreciation.
Now back to the regular scheduled postings.

A friend from Owen Sound confirmed today that the local police service is
using analog inversion scrambling. He reported that the invert.exe program
(with the inversion point set around 1500hz) does successfully decode them.

Just FYI:
In last night's "24" TV show they used a Uniden BC895XLT. The lone weirdo in
the woods used it to prove to Jack's daughter Kim that the A-bomb had
already gone off... he gave her a set of headphones and punched up memory
locations 8 through 10 (at least), which all contained only zeros, no
frequencies. Since they (surprisingly) had her turn away from the scanner,
when Mr. woods weirdo told her that all the frequencies were dead, she
believed him. (Personally, I would have picked up an AM radio to get the
latest news).
(Kim's a real loser. They should have killer her off with her Mom - or
instead of her Mom.)

I was browsing through the Gov. of Ont.(my employer) Job Mart and
came across a job ad for 24 Communications Operators-12 bilingual
and 12 unilingual at the Eastern Region Comm. Ctre. in Smith's Falls.
What struck me was the pay scale($19.98-23.24 per hr.)and that these
are one year temporary assignments(then what?)
Seems under paid for a high stress job.
Ad can be viewed @ www.gojobs.gov.on.ca

Yup, I think in a lot of areas, Bell is using them to dispatch techs.

Well I just reviewed it and its really hard to say if they were all empty, when
she first started to listen it was in a 3 digit channel and the freq looked like
it was in the 200 Mhz band, when the camera turned to her then back to the
nutcase it looked like it was in the 220 Mhz area but it was on channels with 2
digits.
I recorded it digitally last night so that's how I was just able to go back and
have a look.

Historically, this was the (old) Bell Mobile Subscriber Service of the 60-70 era. There were (I think) 13 duplex channels, with Identifiers
like YK, YL, etc, with one to all channels installed in service areas. I seem to recall that Brantford, for example used the YK channel
pair, and a telephone based in that area (Home Area) might have the number YK4 xxxx.
IMTS stands for Itinerant Mobile Telephone Service.
I think that Bell long ago retired service to customers on these frequencies, but has retained these frequencies for internal
communications. I have also been told that the comm tower east of Simcoe on the north side of #3 highway is used for this purpose, and I can
confirm from personal observation that the equipment there is operational.
Has anyone been monitoring these channels to determine occupancy & content?

It sure sounds like Bell using them in the Toronto area.
If my failing memory serves me well, Toronto used all but 152.630
(which was Hamilton) and 152.780 (Niagara). There was also an
automated service (no operator) that appeared later on using the
in-between frequencies 152.525, 152.555, 152.585 etc. During
inversions, I remember hearing "Omeemee Mobile" loud and clear here in
Toronto.

I have a well used unconverted PRO 34 that is more of an eyesore than of any use to me. I'd give it a 3 out of ten on a good day after a couple of beers. It's been so long since it's been portable I don't know what shape the battery pack is in. I have a replacement RS wall wart( proper voltage, centre negative) and it works fine with it.
It's beat up, the keylock switch is missing( maybe it's inside the unit somewhere) the volume pot is dirty and the duct tape needs replacing. It has the original antenna whets left of it.
This unit works great, reception has never been better but It has out lived it's home. If someone needs it for parts or for cell play or for a project I offer it here first otherwise I'll stick it on ebay and see where it goes.
Mail me off list if you're interested. I also have several hundred feet of LMR 400 out in the shed waiting for a home. Consider it equal to hardline cable but just until spring.

In the little bit of listening I did, there were enough clues to
definitely point to Bell. Beyond that, I couldn't say. Why not fire
up your scanner and listen in? They are quite busy during the day.
