Bryan,
I looked for your scanner on the sites where I found mine and had no
luck. The link below is the most updated list from Bill Checks
original. You may find your chipset there and have luck that way.
Good Luck.

Yeah, I figured that.... The Sc180's was after Bill's time... so I
kinda knew it wouldn't have made it onto his list (grn) I'll do some
searching. Thakns for the help, though!

This is the last reply from the government of Canada about digital
scanners, This reply and the other reply I posted should clear up what you
will need to know if you want to buy one of these digital scanners in
Canada. It really is pretty strait forward if you listen to what they are
saying. If you need some one to explain it to you then just send an e-mail
to the government and then you will not get 15 different interpretations.
from people on this list, I think this should clear this up once and for
all.

Importance: High
Radio scanners that are capable of receiving digitally encoded transmissions
must be approved and receive a Technical
Acceptance Certificate under the provisions of RSS-135 (
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/sf01065e.html ). These types of scanners
however are not exempt from the requirements of licensing as is the case
with analogue scanners, and licences are issued subject to the criteria
outlined in IPC 2-1-04 (http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/sf01264e.html ).
If the scanner you wish to purchase has been approved and carries a TAC, it
can be sold and licensed for use in Canada.
If you need further information on this or any matter related to spectrum
management in Canada, please feel free to contact me directly.

I have looked through the previous posts regarding this issue and
from what I read at IC website, seems that the general public for
the most part is gonna be left out in the cold as far as buying a
digital scanner goes.
I guess the only way around it I can see is to join an " approved"
organization, have them buy it for you and pay them for the scanner.
The price is a little scary right now as it is.

Going back a few weeks here, but someone questioned their poor reception of
the Pearson ATIS frequencies on 120.825 and 133.1 MHz when compared to
regular ATC operations. Sorry it took so long to find out, but they are
running at reduced power compared to the ATC frequencies. 133.1 is the lower
power of the pair at only 25% of the regular channels.

Thank you for your reply Bob. That was me, I was beginning to think
that I had posted the message with white text.
Luckily zeroing out the squelch on AM doesn't produce much noise
and I can hear ATIS when I do that.
I prefer monitoring Unicoms and usually will monitor Pearson when I
hear a flight coming in "after-hours".

You're welcome Mike. This week was the first time I was actually at the
transmitter site in many years and while I was there I remembered to check
the outputs. I used to maintain those radios, but have since moved into
other areas of ATC systems maintenance at Pearson.

I now have a BC-250D AND (<--- keyword!) the digital card.
I am a licensed amateur radio operator, so I meet IC's criteria of
who may purchase the unit. I bought them at Radioworld, licensing the
radio is my responsibility AFTER the sale.
Both the 785 and 250 are both APPROVED by IC and can be sold with or

I found the relevant chip on my scanner (MC3361 if anyone is curious). Now all I've got to do is find a 10uF tantalum capacitor somewhere (grin).

Actually you meet IC's criteria for someone who may be issued a licence to
possess a digital scanner. You must still apply for this licence. This is
from IPC-2-1-04 in the files section. It only says that licenced amateurs
may be granted a licence. It's not a for sure thing
Here's the blurb from the IC message posted earlier today:
"These types of scanners
however are not exempt from the requirements of licensing as is the case
with analogue scanners, and licences are issued subject to the criteria
outlined in IPC 2-1-04 (http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/sf01264e.html )."
Apply for a licence and let us know how you make out.

It was already correctly identified as belonging to the system in the Orillia area. There it rebroadcasts the Orillia cars on the Fleetnet system. It's new entry on the trunkedradio.net site seemed to imply it was a Toronto wide frequency. From what I've heard so far, it seems to be limited in use downtown for just the OPP units patrolling the government buildings and has no link to the Fleetnet system at all. -- Steve <sdjones@isys.ca> ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 21 Date: Thu, 13 Feb 2003 21:59:58 -0500 From: Michael Fenech <mfenech@sympatico.ca> Subject: Re: 410.4125 OPP URBAN Repeater On Thursday, February 13, 2003, at 09:37 PM, Steve Jones wrote: > From what I've heard so far, it seems to be limited in use downtown > for just the OPP units > patrolling the government buildings and has no link to the Fleetnet > system at all. That's exactly right. I'd guess they just took it from the pool of available Ontario Government frequencies. The repeater does put out a good signal coming in strong at my location over 15 km from downtown. -- Michael Fenech Toronto, Ontario ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 22 Date: Fri, 14 Feb 2003 03:38:20 -0000 From: "Randy <scnnr@yahoo.com>" <scnnr@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: digital scanners It only says that licenced amateurs > may be granted a licence. You know I really do get fed up with those kind of remarks. I am 52 yrs old and have been listening to scanners, shortwave and other radio coms for long over 20 yrs. I commend all those that go out and take their amateur licence if they so choose to, but I rally am getting tired of someone assuming that an amatuer is anymore responsible, privileged or knowledgeable than me or any other scanner hobbyist. Sorry for this little rant but I keep reading this in various groups and sites and it really makes me sick. If you're feeding a sound card, you don't need anything. Tantalum caps are only preferred due to their small size (where needed). ...Andy ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 24 Date: Thu, 13 Feb 2003 23:11:35 -0500 From: Andrew Porrett <wap@ica.net> Subject: Re: Re: digital scanners Don't worry about it. It looks like hams will only be allowed to have digital scanners that _only_ receive ham frequencies. Since such a scanner doesn't exist (and very likely never will), no special privileges here. It'll be feeding a data slicer... my laptop is sans soundcard. So any capacitor will do, eh? Thats good.. I have no clue where even to get a tantalum capacitor (i've long been a Radio Shack shopper for my electronic stuff (grin)) I assume a capacitor is required.... Thanks !! ____________ Bryan C.
