Hi Joe

I definitely agree that safety is being sacrificed but the flip side
of the coin is that no one outside of weather nuts, scanner heads and
EC people know that weather radio actually exists. So then why bother
updating it, making it better if nobody cares about it. Aha! You
say! Maybe then we should be telling people the benefits of owning an
alert receiver or monitor. Hey even the cool FRS radios have it but
you think people will know how to use it? Not likely. It is the duty
of storm spotters to inform the public of the dangers of severe
weather, any severe weather without coming across as an alarmist or
chicken little. I also think it is the duty of Environment Canada to
spread the word which to me is spread too thin. It was very sad to
find out that people were told about WeatheRadio AFTER the Pine Lake
Tornado. And here I was with a receiver in my hand. I have sent some
messages to EC about weather radio asking for better dissemination.
There are a lot of problems.

You have to CARE about severe weather to be informed. Otherwise you
buy into the myths.

Marc

Hi all Scanont members ...

I'm asking everyone to spend a couple minutes to help globally contribute to this forum (not that we typically don't everyday) by helping me out with a favour. I'm looking to compile a list of police frequencies spanning all of Ontario. (If you're outside of Ontario, and you still want to contribute ... your efforts will be appreciated with your submission) TAFL is a wonderful resource, but does not include Police and security agency information. With amalgamation of communities, movement to trunked systems, and just downright outdated hobby resources, finding accurate information in one spot can be difficult. Our group is a wonderful resource for accurate frequency information ... I'd like to see it readily available and thus reducing the amount of repeat freq. requests. (not to discourage ... just to reduce)

I invite everyone to submit their local police and security firm information to me. I'm hoping for a good response, so to reduce the clutter on the list, please reply to brantopp@yahoo.com . Please include the following in your reply:

Agency
City/Town/Township/Region
Frequency (channel # if known)
Activity scale - 0 (never used) - 5 (very busy) ... this will help us determine which frequencies to program when in your area
Your name, and email ... if you'd like credit for your submission. Everyone who contributes will receive credit.
Any comments, suggestions for monitoring.

If your police services are on a trunked system ... (not sure how this will work but try it anyway)

System ID and Type
City/Town/Township/Region
Talkgroup (channel # if known)
Activity scale - 0 (never used) - 5 (very busy) ... this will help us determine which frequencies to program when in your area
Your name, and email ... if you'd like credit for your submission. Everyone who contributes will receive credit.

Once I start getting some data, I will present the file for us all in the file section of the group.
If this works, it may be fun to do this for Fire, ambulance etc.

Rob

Good idea.

I've tried to create a file for the moh across the province (in the file directory).

Since ontscan.com seems to be dying a slow death it would be nice to start a replacement up. I understand this is in the works but until then it would be nice to start sharing this info. Once the replacement is up, it could be updated with this info.

And Steve ... I can't tell you how handy your file was! Concise accurate information ... in one place ... nothing irrelevant.
Thanks for the encouragement.

I totally agree! If you go on the U.S NOAA site they have pages for
weather radios. When you go on the EC.GC.CA site it is hard to find
that they actually broadcast anything at all.

There was an article in the Toronto Star in the summer about the
decline of weather forcasting in Canada. How our radar sucks, not
informing the public about storms etc.

I will sum it up. When I want an accurate radar shoot, up to date and
clear for the GTA West I dont get it from Canada's site, I get it
from Radar in Buffalo where the radar they show isnt a 2 hour old
shot.

Weather is important. The broadcasts can be better, more info and Env
Canada should EXPLAIN, with a synopsis, the weather on the radios and
on the site. Also, give us a 1-800 number, not a number in Ottawa to
call about complaints, this is a service we pay for, taxpayer money.
I am finished ranting but it bugs me how much better the US service
is compared to ours.

Subject: Behind the times was weather radio in Montreal

I am just going to deal with the weather radio issue. The fact that
NOAA NWS has NEXRAD, SAME (FIPS) and other nice stuff, is well
fortunate for them.

I guess I am one of the few who are very passionate about weather and
severe weather dissemination. I am also passionate about getting the
message out that severe weather, in all its forms, not just severe
thunderstorms, tornadoes et al are dangerous and you need to know.
Former Vice President Al Gore said weather radios should be as common
as smoke detectors. He has a point. But there are several problems
facing our weather radio service. Here are some of the bigger ones.
Remember, people need to know. As long as "certain" people know that
most people don't care about it, they won't improve it.

Wrong area warned: XMJ316, the transmitter on Collingwood continues
to send alert tones when a severe storm crosses Muskoka. Residence in
South Simcoe county therefore are forced to turn off their receivers
because they don't want to be warned of a storm 50 miles away going
away from them. In other words, the system get defeated. I am
assuming that the repeaters can't send alert tones. This needs to be
addressed. SAME would be the right answer but an improvement over the
repeaters would be okay too.

Lack of transmitters: Trouble with Toronto XMJ225 begins as you head
through Holland Marsh. Depending on how good your antenna is, it will
fade in and out. Sometimes it will be fine but after a while, you'll
lose it. XMJ316 is simply too far to be reliable. What we need is a
transmit facility to properly service Cookstown, Alliston, Everett,
Beeton, and Shelburne(if possible since Shelburne is a bit far). Also
XMJ316 is very problematic in Barrie with the hilly terrain. These
are all prime severe weather areas. Do we need an F5 to make things
better? I hope not!

Kilbear gets it, why not Algonquin?: I advised EC that they should
seriously consider installing a transmitter/repeater in the park to
service at least the Parkway Corridor. As of now, you must get your
weather info from your camp office or the visitor centre. This is not
exceptable as an avid camper who needs to know what is going on in the
greatest provincial park in Ontario. We got hit by a storm so fast we
were caught somewhat unprepared. We lived though. It would have been
nice to have an alert go off. Of course, the visitor centre said
"chance of a thunderstorm". That was usefull.....hmmmm.
Bottom line, Provincial Parks, popular ones, NEED IT!

Todays sporty receiver, FRS or otherwise are marketed as outdoorsy and
cool to hike with. Don't expect the weather option to work very well
in Ontario in our woods with some exceptions. Over at Rattlesnake
Point you might catch Buffalo NWS.

Well that is enough ranting.

Marc

I am from Thunder Bay (now in Norfolk area) and if you are looking for
Thunder Bay Freqs you can go to either Intercity Mall or County Fair
Plaza and the Radio Shack store used to have a page of local Freqs. At
least they used to. TBay Police used to have 3 channels but would only
use Channels 2 & 3 142.410 & 143.0550
Happy frequency hunting.
