A Toronto-area frequency website has been in the works for a few months.

Stay tuned!

My PRO-92 usually lies flat which can make the display hard to
follow when things are happening fast. I thought about mounting
a cellphone holder on a piece of wood, to hold the radio angled up
in a better way. I may do this but meantime decided to use a cheap
webcam ($20) pointed down on the display, which makes the display
visible about twice full size in a window on the computer screen.

The positioning and lighting is finicky but once set I can listen
and watch the display while doing other things (like watching Trunker
or Etrunk running on the same system...neat!).

The webcam update rate is only 3-4 frames per second so there's a
slight time lag, and very short activity can be missed. Better
webcams exist, and this one's not doing much else at present.

The PRO-92 backlight is horribly dim. Win92 allows setting the
backlight on continuously. Problem is that without the computer the
timer cannot be changed on the fly. I modified a $10 book light to
use a super-bright yellow LED (white would be cool now). This
extends the life of the AA cells to 20 hours or more per charge for
600mAh cells, which are getting freed up by switching other things
to NiMHs of much higher capacity.

You are right about the Pro-92's backlight being horrible. I've seen a few
webpages where guys have replaced the existing backlight led's with newer,
high-intensity ones with great results. I've purchased some mini 'crystal
blue' led's for mine, but haven't had time to actually install them yet.

With the old setup you were able to receive posts via e-mail. Is there a way to set that up with the new forum? I can't find an option for that other than notification of reply's to threads participated in.

Chris,

Just a caution, I tried projecting a blue LED into the display of
my PRO-2026, albeit from behind where the orange lamp is now. It
looked rather ghastly. Blue is a "cool" colour, but might not
work the best. Not trying to discourage you at all; just that some
colours are better than others.

Hmmm.... You have a good point there.... I might have to try green, or
perhaps just a brighter orange/yellow one...

Hi.

Would any of you people know where I could find a consice listing of
Airport frequs for Pearson and Hamilton AP? Ontscan is gone. Is the
Haruteq book any good for thart or is it a dumb question?

Also, I have a pretty good grasp of the partol areas of the Toronto
PD. I noticed that someone recently was going to put 2 gether a
patrol area map. If you need help message me back. I know sone of the
divisions quite well.

You'd be better off asking your question there. This mailing list has
nothing to do with Ron's page. All questions regarding dustpile.com and
Ontscan should be directed to him.

You'd have to inquire there. Ron's new Satellite business seems to be
taking up his time/website, he's probably not that interested in
maintaining Ontscan's scanner sections.

I heard last week Air EMS Unit 7796 enroute somewhere on 129.275
Where is this unit based out of, and what are all the EMS unit numbers?
I know 7791, handles Eastern Ontario, and I think 7792 is Sounthern
Ontario.
Anyone have anything else?

If you have an HF rig:
Trenton Military is on 11.230 usb
U.S. on 11.175 usb.
Given the post 9/11 atmosphere most military trans. might be
encrypted.
There is a book you can by called " Canadian Military Radio Frequency Guide "
by Robert S. Ing. Right now I cannot remember where I got mine from.
Possibly from Haruteg ?

Seaching for "Ontario Air Ambulance" in Google is a good start. One
interesting site that I found there is:

There are now two helicopters out of Toronto. I believe their
call-signs are 799T and 799H. Air ambulance ops in the GTA and other
areas of Southern Ontario are on 413.6875 MHz.

Transit Control just sent someone over to St. Patrick's subway station
due to a person taking photos of passing trains.
Is this a recent (post 9-11) thing, or have the TTC always had a policy
against it?

They've always been a little tight about stuff like that. I remember many years ago being jacked up by TTC police for filming with an old super 8 cam inside one of the stations. Apparently you can but only with prior approval and a permit.

Sorry, I could be more specific about that.
Toronto has been staffing a couple of choppers at the same time, thus they
had to change the call signs slightly for them when there are more than one
staffed. 799A, 799H, 799T (pronounced 799 Alpha, Hotel and Tango
respectively). This letter corresponds to the last letter in the aircraft
identifier.
I believe, but can't be certain, that some of the other bases have backup
aircraft. I also believe that before 799 staffed a couple of units, they
would alternate aircraft for night and day shift. One being serviced while
the other is flying.
