I just can't see how an Icom can be a good portable to have, All banks or
one bank, how is this pratical? I realise otherwise it might be a great
reciever but I just couldn't get past the limitations...

Well, I like it for that very reason - overall, it receives better than
anything I have.

Other good points:

- crisp, clear audio
- 2 AA batteries that last forever
- compact package with a short duckie
- 18 dynamic banks - build your own banks on the fly!
- really wide coverage - medium wave to microwave
- did I mention the hot receiver?

I couldn't have it as my only scanner, but it most definitely has it's
place.

Train Dispatcher 2.
You don't need TD3 or TB3 unless you want to build layouts....if you
join the ATCS_Monitor group on Yahoogroups, they have a files section
where people contribute their files, you can download whatever you
need. I put a couple of Toronto lay files in there, also have the
Bala Subdivision and the TH+B Hamilton area worked out if anyone
wants 'em.
Of course, if you like playing Train Dispatcher, I have a killer
layout file for Toronto Union Station with the entire afternoon rush
hour programmed in.....enough to tear your hair out :-)
PS - never did say thanks to Bryan and his spouse for letting us
invade his place, tie up his phone, terroise his cat, etc:-)
Great evening!
Cheers

Different strokes for different folks.
If you're used to what Uniden has convinced you is a good scanner, then
by all means stick with what you know.
Just because its of no use to you doesn't make it bad. I kind of like
my scanners not tell me whats worth listening to like Unidens do,
having these impractical and sometimes insulting band limits. The R2
and R5 are full coverage from 500 kHz to 2 gHz.
I could go on and on.
