Some history...

Wills Motors is an old-time (over 75 years in existence) Chevrolet
dealer located at one time in both Delhi and Smithville. I make the
distinction as a Chevy dealer, as they have always been staunchly
Chevy as opposed to one of those fancy all lines GM dealer <g>.

The bus lines division is an offshoot of the garage business; not so
unusual years ago. These days the
bus/highway coach business is located in Binbrook which used to be an
area outside of Hamilton. With the amalgamation of surrounding fringe
areas a year or more ago, Binbrook is now considered part of Hamilton
as opposed to Hamilton-Wentworth (the county) as in the past.

Kenwood information on the web shows CTCSS encode as standard
CTCSS decode as an option for that model.
Could it be that the option is not installed ?
If you upload the manual page perhaps I can help.
How far east are you ? I am in Belleville.

After my first reply, I realised the manual was posted.

Would appear that the optional CTCSS gives the option of separate
and different transmitt tones. The wording on page 19 of the .pdf
(13 of the manual) infers encode and decode with the same tone are
standard.
So "A" toggles tone on /off indicated by a "t" in the display
To select tone press "F" "A' turn tune until display indicates 107.2
Press "MONI" "D" to exit
Hope that works

Is there a listing of frequencies for marine traffic on the great lakes? Commercial and/or pleasure/coast guard...specifically I'm talking about lake Huron.
Thanks

I will be putting my scanner antenna outside this spring and was wondering if I can get some info on this subject. I have 50 FT of rgu8 or rg8 coaxial cable and I have 100 FT of rgu58 coaxial cable, can I run the rgu8 thick coaxial cable from my antenna and then connect the rgu58 coaxial cable to finish the run to the house or will I cause a problem with to much cable signal loose or will it cause some other problems with receiving signals on my scanner ?? I would like too use this cable instead of buying new coaxial cable. ???

Well rg8u is not the best to use if you want to listen to anything over about 400Mhz and with a barrel connector in there and then the 100 feet of rg58 you will be loosing so much signal you might be better off with a rubber duckie or back of set.

In a news item reported today in the Brantford Expositor (Expositor
Staff), Brantford City Police Services have been operating their new 800
mhz trunked system since last Monday in parallel with their existing VHS
(sic) system.
According to the report, Brantford Fire is expected to join the PD on
the new system within a month.
The system, by Tyco Electronics, presently is composed of 110 portables
in police vehicles.
Except for a comment that it is a five channel (one control channel)
digital voice system, no other information of a technical nature was
reported in the newspaper.

Must be an EDACS system, if it's provided by Tyco Electronics...

Yes, Chris, I have heard privately that it was EDACS encrypted, but didn't

I tried searching the Tyco web pages, but didn't learn anything.re types of
systems they tender.

No, I haven't heard anything frequency wise yet but will keep a
lookout. As for web site info, try:
http://www.macom-wireless.com/about/default.asp

The Tyco Electronics site will take you to the Ma/Com site, but it's a lot
of clicking. I work for a division of Tyco Fire & Security and can hardly
find my way around our own site :)

Subject: EDACS news....

Sorta old news (Aug 12/2002) but the 1st I'd heard of it... You can read
the pull posting at
http://www.macom-wireless.com/news/pressdetail.asp?id=35 The bit about
trunked radio scanners was intriguing!

APCO 2002, Nashville, TN., Aug. 12, 2002 – M/A-COM, Inc., a leading
manufacturer of critical radio systems deployed around the world, today
announced availability of the latest upgrades for the company’s Enhanced
Digital Access Communications System (EDACS) to meet customers on-going
voice and data needs. The new enhancements to EDACS provide improved levels
of security, capacity and technology integration, offering customers a
reliable and trusted solution for a wide variety of critical communications
needs.

“M/A-COM is committed to working with our EDACS customers to offer improved
services as their communications needs evolve and new technologies become
available,” says Dennis Maddox, Product Manager of Systems and
Infrastructure, M/A-COM. “M/A-COM recognizes the significant investment our
customers are making in their communications systems and the importance of
selecting the right technologies coupled with the ability of the system to
grow and adapt as users’ needs change. We strive to ensure that our
customers achieve the maximum return on their investment now and in the
future.”

Security
Security is a crucial feature of any critical communications system as any
security breach on a system compromises its effectiveness and that of the
public safety professionals that rely on it. EDACS Security Key (ESK)
addresses this need through several unique features:
• ESK allows each customer to define a unique security code that is
programmed into the radio products and site equipment. During normal
operation, if the code stored in the radio and site do not match, the radio
will not receive calls from or transmit calls to that particular site
• ESK prevents trunked radio scanners from monitoring radio traffic on an
EDACS site
• ESK offers restricted access to radio programming. Once a radio has been
programmed with an ESK security code, that radio cannot be read or altered
unless the specific code is provided by the user.

Probably just Provoice digital without the encryption.

Unfortunately, the new APCO25 scanner won't do it.

Thanks for the frequencies, Bill. I am checking that info now.
Have verified LCN 1,2,3,5 but will likely have to let Analyzer run for a long
time to get all the active channels. I will monitor the VHF systems
simultaneously for correlation. I don't expect to get much out of this, but it
will be an instructive exercise.
Sigs are very strong here:
Control channel LCN1 857.8375 @ -60dbm, BER @ 0.00% in 150k samples
