Subject: HAM - Kenwood TH-235A Portable

I've recently bored a 2 metre ham portable, in hopes of just buying
it and using it for conventional vhf scanning (only). 136-174
receive along with the typical 2m HAM band.

My questions are this. As I understand it, this radio does have the
CTCSS Tone board in it. I would like to use this feature, for
scanning the OPP out here in my area. (Eastern Ont.) (It'll be
awhile before they switch over here anyways, so it doesn't matter)

Anyhow, I can't figure out how to program the tone feature for
example 141.195 and 141.39 (The two main ch's in my area)which has a
tone of 107.2

It has 60 ch's, scanning so I figure it's a decent enough little
radio to have a hold of, then maybe sell it online in the future or
something once I can no longer listen to the OPP. Although I could
still use it for everything else such as fire depts. and EMS
(Although they'll be switching too.

I have the manual for this radio (which I'll upload to the group)
but still couldn't figure this CTCSS feature out.

Or is it just simply put that the feature won't work for just the
recieving scan mode only? Does the CTCSS only work for the 2m HAM
band on this radio or what?

Thanks for the help on this guys.

Randy

I wanted to thank Bryan and his wife. They were great hosts last
night and I think that everyone feels the same way. It was good to
meet everyone. I learned a lot and had a chance to meet a lot of
cool people. I hope that everyone is open to doing this again,
where ever that may be.

In conversation last night, someone mentioned a place that was a good
source for electronic supplies. I believe this was around College
and Spidina. I was hoping that someone could tell me more about the
exactly location.

Thanks Again

Chris

Last night's Scanont meet went great, and I'd like to thank everyone for coming out.

It was great putting faces to the names, and seeing everyone playing with their toys.

Thank you especially to those who brought their computer setups (Trunker, etc.) thanks especially to Paul for bringing his ATCS setup, it was very interesting.

Oh, and my cat is still looking for the laser pointer (grin).

Thanks!!

bryan

I second the comments about Bryan, his wife, and his cat :-) who were all
great hosts, with the latter supplying some of us with additional
amusement...

As far as electronic supplies, I know that I mentioned that there were two
places on Queen Street, 1.5 blocks EAST of Spadina, on the south side. One
is Active Electronics Surplus [large orange sign overhead the door]. A few
doors EAST of that store is another, far smaller one, also on the south
side, with the entry door on the western side of the storefront (I do not
remember the name) which is also full of electronic components and various
connectors... Both are good, and depending on what you want, one or the
other should have it...

Hey Chris..

There's a few places.

Active Surplus and Supremetronics are the best that I've seen.

They are both on Queen Street, just west of the CITY-TV building at Queen and John Street.

It's on the south side of Queen, there's a big orange sign. You really can't miss it.

I was just searching some unknown frequencies on my scanner and got some activity on 168.255, can some one help me identify this user. It is a charter bus company because they were talking between each other and they said that they were going to be going over the Peace Bridge hear in Fort Erie and they were going to the Marine Midland Arena, Just checked the TV Guide and there is an NHL game on between Buffalo @ Toronto.

I went on the internet and went to the live camera on the Peace Bridge and saw the Seven (7) large chartered bus's heading into Buffalo, I have checked the Canada Government TAFL frequencies, an old Haruteq book and can't find a charter bus service or anything that comes close to this. Does any one know who this frequency is licensed too.
Steve

Let's see: a quick TAFL check shows a "Wills Motors Limited" and "Union
Gas" on that frequency. A quick Google search shows that Wills Motors
is a.k.a. Wills Bus Lines...

Subject: VHF LTR?
After being boooed offstage and having to sit down after that
last very bad one-liner, I have a serious question....
I've picked up a weak signal on 152.885 that pulses on
briefly about every 5-1/2 seconds. TAFL turns up nothing but
FCC shows WPRX343 at Gouverneur NY in St. Lawrence Cty, also
on 152.230 and 153.395. I hear a weak CW ID on the last frequency
but it may be coming from somewhere else.
I have not heard voice yet, probably due to not being able
to listen during weekday primetime. Is this indicative of VHF
LTR? Has anyone confirmed hearing a VHF LTR system?
Dave

You're welcome. When looking things up in TAFL, keep in mind that the
name under which a company's radio licenses are registered might not be
the same as the operating company's name. Many taxi companies, for
example, can be found registered under their business number (e.g.
123456 Ontario Ltd.).

Ok Michael, I think this is why from time to time when I do Searches for a
company name I can't find their frequencies because it may be under a number
account.
Steve
Also thanks to Matthew I did not know that BINBROOK, ONT was a part of
Hamilton Ont., boy I should have known that : - (
