That's M42. That is probably the easiest deep sky thing you can
find in the sky these days. It's just getting low in the sky now
and probably hard to get focused through the thicker atmosphere.
I'm saying this from expereince, since I haven't seen that object in
about 6 weeks now!

Some other farily bright objects you could try later in the
spring/summer would be M8 (Lagoon nebula), M17 (Swan nebula), M13
(nice big globular cluster) and when you get some practice finding
things, try M51 (Whirlpool galaxy) which is nicly placed this time
of year.
