I usual try to catch it earlier in the evening at this time of year, my telescope does not get in the way of the tripod legs. After about 10:30pm I can't reach it as the tripod gets in the way.

I have pretty much perfected a route to it. Using the 8*50 finder I line up on Dubhe (last star of the bowl of the big dipper) and then swing by hand in mostly dec until I see the contrasting pair of lambda (orange) and 2 Draconis.

<em class="quotelev1">>From there I work in mostly RA along some lines of bright stars TYC 4388-58-1, 4385-1959-1 etc until I can just see the tiny fuzz of M81 in the finder scope. Then I turn to the eyepeice, and with a bit of luck its there!

All this is done by hand, as I have no slewing motors. With a 8inch f5 newtonian and a meade 4000 26mm eyepiece, I get M81 and M82 nicely framed in the eyepiece.

I also find it is possible to strap some weights to the top of the tube, which means the tube is high enoough in its holding hoops to miss the tripod. A small stool of just the right height to sit on and look through the finderscope is also useful.

Subject: [QCUIAG] How to point GEM scope in N. Polar region

I like to image M81 and such but getting there without a GOTO scope is
difficult for my GEM scope.

Any suggestions on the use of a CG5 scope?
