Gday Rat,
The dark rings are a result of my applying too heavy an Unsharp Mask, I'm
afraid. I had to push things a bit to get the fainter bits of the galaxies
to show some detail, but doing so caused the stars to develop the rings
unfortunately.
The 1004x started life as a low-light monochrome CCTV camera module. It uses
a Sony ExView CCD sensor, which is pretty sensitive especially in the near
IR, which is good for stars and galaxies. I modified the camera to do long
exposures, and have added a Peltier cooler for the CCD - the whole thing
lives in a baked bean can. You can find out more at:

Cheers,
Jon.
