RE: [PCR-1000] A couple of more questions from a newby

First, my PCR-1000 uses the serial port. I never had any luck with my
USB-SERIAL adapter with my PCR-1000. And since my obd-II adapter
(connects my
car's computers to my laptop) also used a serial port I ended up needing
a laptop with a serial port. First, an HP Omnibook,
that was incorrectly listed as having a serial port. Then I got a
Quatech
SS-100 pmica card. I ended up returning both the card and the laptop
for a Toshiba Satellite 1800, with the serial port.
Since then, I've purchased 5 Toshiba Librettos 110CTs thru E-Bay,
and with the port replicator, use one of them for my PCR-1000 with
 TALKPCR.
Audio wise, the unit comes with a speaker, and a switch inside to
select
between line out and speaker out at the jack. I've used the microphone
input
without any problem.

#2. is a little harder. Size, cost, COMPUTER INTERFACE, broadband
coverage,
portability, the fact that there isn't too much product competition,
different software options.

#3. There are several software packages out there. TalkPCR (~$50) is MY
favorite. (Available for free if that suits you). pcr1kmini is a small
FREE
program.
My recommendation is to skip bonito software. I paid an extra $70 or
so
to have it included with my PCR-1000. I literally threw the disk and
software key IN THE TRASH after placing the disk in the microwave for 10
seconds. Silver side up is a better show.

Serial port notebooks are getting harder and harder to find. I'd guess
that
ICOM will be coming out with a USB PCR in the near future.
 Good luck and have FUN.

Subject: [PCR-1000] A couple of more questions from a newby

1. I have a small laptop (Sony PCG-C1X) that has no parallel port so I
use a USB to parallel adapter to communicate with my parallel port type
HP printer so I was hoping I can use that same cable to interface with
the ICOM PCR 1000.

Audio wise, the only audio input I have is a microphone input.

Anyone successfuly interfaced with such a setup?

Now for the real deal:

2. What features of the ICOM PCR1000 make it preferable to a table-top
scanner, shortwave receiver, etc.?
