My personal opinion about hardware dongles and the like is that it´s a
sucking system.
Easy to get lost, unconvenient when you have two or more computers to
run the program
on (who hasn´t..) Many vendors has tried and then abandoned this system
over the years,
there is indeed other methodes to protect the software, although there
will always be
persons and elements who will crack the systems. There is a lot of money
involved in
this business, just look at the different codesystems in the satellite
TV market.
I´m afraid there will always exist ways to crack different systems and
softwares. Some years
ago I really thought that the satellite industries would come up with a
"waterproof" system,
but I have changed my opinion after investigating more deeply. There is
to much money to
"earn" in this business, especially compared to what we discuss here in
this forum.
Also quite "heavy" and very expensive software producers like Autodesk
and others has
used hardware dongles, but why spend money on devices that doesn´t
fulfill their function
as desired?
Shutting down sites like Geocity and other will only make the persons
who want to share
their different softwares to move to new sites, some of them really
think this is a part
of the "sports" and have ready made back-up systems. It will only dely
them for some days,
so why bother to hunt them?
I want to say again this is my personal thoughts and opinions, I manage
quite well without
the need to download cracked software. Please feel free to trace down IP
adresses or so if
this is interesting.
I strongly feel for Bonito and their resellers and others that are
affected, not to mention
the music and film business and so on, but I think this will be a never
ending war, quite
useless to fight back I´m afraid.

I am afraid you do need the dongle.
This actually does two things:
- it acts as a copy protection device
- it also contains circuitry to provide the correct signal outputs for
controlling a wide range of radios that do not have a standard RS232
interface (though obviously this doesn't apply to the PCR-1000) Regards,
Tim

Thanks for the answer on the win XP issue. I am wondering whether the
software that works only with the PCR1000 does need any dongle or not?!
The reason for my question is that if it does not need any type of
dongle i can buy the software from the internet and download it, thus
not needing to pay taxes and stupid fees? ... But i am not so up-to-date
with this method, and would like to know what to do... If i buy software
from the web and just downloading it, then put it on a CD for my own use
(i wouldnt want the software to get corrupted or destroyed if anything
happens to the HDD or the computer in general. And what about support?
Manuals ... well, all of that stuff... There is no need to rush any
answer to this, i wont buy anything at all right now, but when i get the
money for it i'll start considering my options. Well... that is if it is
possible to get to buy and download directly from the internet...
(btw: i have a really crappy internet-connection)
