I uploaded my first try of mars to the mars folder
named "Mars7-11-03 - Sean R"
I used Nikon CP5000 w/Scopetronics 18mm on a C8
2.6 Digital zoom - f/4.8 - 1/60th - ISO-400
Set for 3 frames a sec at 1280x960
67 frames stacked in registax and some Photoshop Editing.
I'm using an old Commador monitor for focusing but not so good
as of yet. Focus looks good on screen but the pictures dont seem
too sharp after taking.
I'll just keep trying.

PS. Any pointers would be great.....

A few days (or weeks) ago I was told that a good camera to use for
shooting planets (like Mars) was the Phillips ToUcam Pro. I was
wondering, what software do people use in conjunction with this
camera when taking the pictures (I'm a newby at this). Do they use
the software that comes with the camera? Or, do they use something
like Astroart?
I was also told that you can get good results from using a Baader
Planetarium flatfield converter (Barlow) in conjunction with the
ToUCam. I have a Celestron Nexstar 11 GPS that I have fitted with a
2" opener from Astrophysics. Should I use a 2" diagonal and the
Baader converter, or simply attach the Baader converter without a
diagonal? Does anyone use spacers with the Baader converter?
Thank you in advance for your response.

Hi KCC,
This list is primarily for digital still cameras
and not webcamming. We just recently ended a thread
about how we deal with webcam topics and issues.

I recently purchased a Meade LX200 12 inch SCT, and want to do
astrophotography with it. I'll be using a Nikon D100 digital camera at
prime focus (or a Nikon 990 with Digi-T ring adapters on a 30 mm
eyepiece).
I know that without a wedge mount, I can't do super long exposures, and
at this time, I can't afford a wedge. My question is, without a field
derotator or a wedge, what is a reasonable limiting exposure length,
assuming dark sky and good Alt-Azimuth alignment for north and south?
Does anyone have suggestions for limits, or do I just go for it and see
what happens?

Hi Denis,
A dark frame measures the amount of noise generated by the camera
electronics and CMOS or CCD chip for a given period of time with no
light falling on the chip. Thus the name dark frame. Dark frames are
taken with the same ISO and exposure length as a light frame where
light from the object falls on the chip. The idea is to use the dark
frame to remove the noise added by the camera from the light frame.
This has been done in the past by subtracting the dark frame from
the light frame. But this approach is problematic and so more
sophisticated methods such as adaptive dark frames have been
devised. With todays digital SLRs and the proper use of raw image
data, dark frames, and stacking noise can be very effectively
handled.

Ironic, given the name (Coolpix) don't you think?
Can some one fill in a newbie on the concepts of dark frames and
"stretching" of the image? I understand that a dark frame is taken
with the lens covered, to see how much noise is in the imaging chip,
but how long do you go? How does one do this?
If I knew, I could contribute experience with a Nikon D100.

Hey,
I was out tonight trying to get some doubles but I couldn't get
the focus right. So I turned to Mars and checked focus and it seemed
ok. I went ahead and took a few of Mars and stacked them and little
processing.
6" f/8 Tal Reflector, CP4500 18mm EP and 2x Barlow at ISO200
1/15sec, 110 stacked w/ Registax2. Processed in PS.

Thanks Jose...not bad for a little ol' 6"f/8 reflector...nothing
close to what you get with the big ol' light gatherer. But still just
as much fun.
Thanks,
Johnny
