SubjectTalkPCR v2.9 Beta

Has the support and future developement of TalkPCR been abandoned ?? I saw on the web site that the last entry was April 2002 and TalkPCR 2.9 is still a BETA ??? I really don't understand and they are still charging $45.00 for registration !! Maybe I am missing something here.

Because the software is stable, no-one can think of any critical features
that need to be added, why should the author still not make money. OR do
you think that the price should have been increased since inflation has
reduced the value of the $45.00 registration fee.

SubjectTalkPCR v2.9 Beta

Hello Jim

>> !! Maybe I am missing something here.

Yes, why does software have to be updated on a regular basis,
if it works well no need for it. I know lots of good software
that has been spolied by updates. When you do update software,
it should be done to make it better, not just because it have
been some time since last update.

I am sure that if you have some realy good reasons for a upgrade
of TalkPCR, then the autor will be happy to hear about it.

Regards Max

SubjectTalkPCR v2.9 Beta

I'll bet the problem is in the fact that it is still referred to as beta.

Beta makes the users think it is still a work in process.
As an author, If software has reached a stable milestone and no immediate
updates are planned, The software should be taken out of the beta stage.

It sounds like You and I both have had problem with software that have be
ruined by updates. This is the programmers fault. Some get tired of a
project and just don't test updates like they tested the original product.
We as users and the product are the ones that suffer.

Just my 2 cents worth, But I have been writing code for 20+ years.

SubjectTalkPCR v2.9 Beta

I always thought that once it was stable, there was a full release and it
was no longer in "beta". I rarely download anything in "beta" because I
figure it is still in testing and not quite ready for prime time. If
something stays in beta for a year, I figure either there is no interest in
the product by others or no longer any interest by the author.

I would expect these perceptions are the rule rather than the exception,
which brought up the questions to start with. When I saw that TalkPCR was
still beta, I decided not to download it, rather going with the Icom
standard bundle which works well enough for me at this point in time. Maybe
if I devoted more time, I might wish to give TalkPCR a hard look or Bonito
(my unit was pre-Bonito but I ordered a copy anyway....for what I do, it was
not a wise purchase)...

Do not care about the word "beta", all computer software is "beta" versions,
even my Windows is a "beta", if it was a final, they would not release
updates.

There is no standard for when a release is a beta or not, it is up to
the autor to decide if he want to use the word or not.

SubjectTalkPCR v2.9 Beta

Sorry Max, I don't agree.
In the same breath, I don't want to start a flame war. This is not the
place.
But all software is not Beta. (with the possible exception of what comes
from Microsoft) :)

Updates are for new features, and yes, sometimes bugfixes.
Believe it or not, In the programming world there are standards.
Alpha releases, Beta releases are meant to signify that the application is a
work in process.
Testing is still being done and features are still being finished.
once this is finished, The product goes gold (since testing and feature work
is completed)
The product is now released to the general public.

This is not to say that bugfixes might need to be released, (IBM calls them
PTF's (Program temporary fixes)) but as a rule work on a product at that
level is stopped.
The next step is to begin work on Version 2.

Like I said before, I've been doing this for a long time and that's the way
I run my shop and any shop that I've been lead.

I agree, a lot of shops don't put out quality software. It seems that money
is more important. But in my shop reputation is the most important.

SubjectTalkPCR v2.9 Beta

Pete Mahy must have been listening to you. On his web site you can find
the following

Quote

You may like to try the latest version of TalkPCR, available at :-

http://www.qrosoft.co.uk/tpv20/tpv2_99b.exe {903kb}

This file is a self extracting install of the TalkPCR.exe only, it
requires version 2.4 previously installed.

This version will become version 3_00, with an updated help file and
full install, hopefully within the year, (2003).

This version has several new features, (over version 2.4);

Support for several USB to Serial adaptors, details here,
Search, Sort, and Print in the channel Edit form,
Save Spectrum Analyser data to CSV,
Many adjustments for Windows XP,
Selection of Sound card for playback and record.
Rework on Bandscope timings.
Listen to peaks on Bandscope, (PCR100).
Several minor bug fixes, and other user requests

End Quote.

Graham
