Icom PCR1000

SubjectAdvice please.

I've lurked the lists for awhile to try to make a good decision.
Now I would appreciate advice that will help make this adventure good:

1. I've placed an order:
Item Ref. Price ea. Qty. Description

 IC-PCR1000 02 BON $354.95 1 BLKD PCR1000 WITH BONITO SOFTWARE
 IC-UT106 $139.95 1 PLUG-IN DSP IC-706MKII/PCR1000

2. I've erected a discone antenna for the higher frequencies. I think of it
as a temporary effort...since it is only about 30ft high now.
3. I've have two G5RV antennae 102ft top and one 51ft ... and although
both are not up, I've been using the smaller one with a portable radio with
some satisfaction...I think the larger would do better.
4. I drove an 8ft copper rod 6 feet deep, next to the house, and attached 12
gauge copper wire from the ground to a 'lightening arrestor' which is
basically just a connector with a ground to the shield (not the kind with a
surge protection).
5. I will check out all the software...but I'm certain to be getting
TalkPCR.
6. I bought a Model MFJ-956 Preselector/Tuner.

What have I forgotten? What should I check into? What would improve the
setup?

Thanks
Ken

You've really done a complete job. An antenna switch or perhaps diplexer,
(allows two antennas on one cable. I even noticed that the ones at Home Depot
were rated for 5-1000 MHz). In the TV cable section.
Also, groups.yahoo.com have lists for both PCR1000 and TalkPCR.

SkySweeper.com is a heavy duty DSP/communication application that
seems to be able to do what RadioComm promises.
Good Luck!

Hi Kenneth,
pretty good set up
my advice is to use it-get to know the 1000 using what you have. The
preselector will aid reception below 30mHz.
When you have tried it and listened for many hours/days/weeks/seasons
etc then you can try different aerials etc and you will then tell the
difference.
You will then know what bands you feel are worthy of speialist aerials .
I think you will enjoy the 1000.

RadioCom is NOT free. The PCR-1000 before RadioCom was around $265.
I'd buy another in a second, without RadioCom.
I like SkySweepPro very much. And TalkPCR.
    Both worth registering.

I'd add that if you plan on running more then one receiver or two good
antennas.... one for vhf+ and one for hf ... one of the best invesments you
can make is a Stridsberg Engineering receiver multicoupler. I've used them
myself at home and professionally and they are a top flight device.
Ordinary antenna switches have generally unacceptable signal loss for wek
signal work . A multicoupler with a built in zero gain amplifier also lets
you hook multiple receivers to an existing antenna.
http://www.stridsberg.com/prod01.htm also available here at the best price
... http://www.scancat.com

I run one of HF and one for VHF (both amplified 4 port models MCA104 for HF
with 4 receivers attached and the MCA204 for VHF and above with at present 3
receivers attached) add a good passive switch at the antenna input of the
PCR-1000 to switch antennas and you really have a great system.

Mike
